New Board Games Are Making a Comeback

In a world that seems to be getting ever more digital, board games have experienced a recent resurgence. Sales have skyrocketed over the past few years as families, friends and individuals rediscover – or discover – the social and mental benefits (and friendly rifts) of playing together at the table.

The genre stretches from simple, abstract games like snakes and ladders or checkers to those with a specific theme or narrative, such as the classic Cluedo. Playing them triggers the release of endorphins, which are the body’s natural feel-good chemicals, and can improve conscious and unconscious mind functions.

A number of randomized controlled trials have found that the act of playing board games can help to improve cognitive impairment, depression and mood instability. They can also facilitate behavioral modifications, such as healthier eating habits or a reduction in smoking or alcohol consumption.

But it’s not just the positive effects of playing board games that are on the rise – there are new games being released all the time, from extremely light and quick sessions to those that require hours of thoughtful strategic planning. And they come in all kinds of themes – there’s literally something out there for everyone, from ancient history to the future of space travel.

For those seeking out a more studious, educational experience, there are even board games that support curriculum frameworks (check out our Educator Guide to Board Games for more on that). So whether you’re looking for a fun family game, a challenging solo adventure or a heart-pounding multiplayer battle, you’ll find it at your local game store.
