Board games aren’t just for kids, and there’s plenty of fun to be had with adults. From strategy-riddled role-playing games to fast-paced two-player battles, there’s a game out there for every fandom. Put your brain to work with classic word games and puzzles, or try a dice game for a touch of luck. Find classic favorites like Monopoly and Uno or more modern choices with a twist, including Dungeons & Dragons, Catan, Gloomhaven, and others.
Play With A Purpose
Boardgames are a great way to bond with family and friends, and can be a great tool for children to practice dexterity and cooperation. They also teach important skills, such as following rules and evaluating outcomes. For older players, they can test your problem-solving and planning skills while still fostering a spirit of competition and teamwork.
A new addition to the Portland scene, Master Goblin Games opened March 1 and offers a modest selection of board and tabletop games with an emphasis on open gaming and weekly events. Gather your crew for a rousing game of Magic Monday or a tabletop tournament and enjoy Sisters coffee and food at the adjacent cafe.
If you’d rather not head out to a local game store, BKLYN offers an online board game subscription service called Instacart. This on-demand service allows you to order your favorite titles for pickup or delivery from local and national retailers. The library also has a collection of board games available to borrow for three weeks at Adams Street, Bushwick, Crown Heights, Jamaica Bay, McKinley Park, New Utrecht, Windsor Terrace and Central Library’s Youth Wing reference desks. Once you’re done playing, you can return your game to the library at one of the many book drops in your neighborhood or to any Brooklyn Public Library location.
