Common folks know about the usual games that are done with playing cards are an enjoyable past time. But what they do not know is that there is a difference between bridge playing cards and poker playing cards.
Before we go into the differences, let us point out the similarities between the two decks. Both bridge & poker decks number to fifty-two cards not counting the jokers and extra cards. So quite commonly it is relatively possible to be able to play a bridge game with poker decks, or the other way around, a poker game with bridge decks. Which goes to say, anybody could play any game of cards that calls for a standard 52-deck set using either a poker deck or a bridge deck?
So what makes a poker deck different from a bridge deck? The answer is simply the dimensions; bridge cards are designed to be narrower than poker cards. The reason for this is you have to hold more cards in bridge during play.
The dimensions of a bridge card measures about three and a half inches long and two and a quarter inch wide. On the other hand, the dimensions of a poker card are three and a half inches long and two and a half inches wide. So in to cut a long story short, poker decks are a quarter (1/4″) inch wider than a bridge deck. And most playing cards have the size of a poker deck.
One particular brand of bridge decks is KEM which produces plastic cards. There is a proper way of caring for plastic cards like these. The cards should be stored within a constant temperature. The most suitable temperature is sixty-eight to seventy-two degrees Fahrenheit. Return the cards to their package after use, making sure that the jokers or extra cards are placed above and below to prevent the cards from warping.
When cleaning these plastic decks of grime and other sticky stuff, it is advisable to use a solution of lukewarm water and dishwashing liquid with a few drops of vinegar. Pat it dry with a clean hand towel. Do not treat the cards with talcum powder.
KEM cards are so durable it will last for years if accorded the proper care. In due course, plastic playing cards will come out cheaper than those that are made of paper because you won’t have to replace them for years to come. Of course, it’s all a matter of preference.
