The board games movie is an underrepresented sub-genre of nerd cinema. Sure, there’s a ton of comic book adaptations on the big screen these days, but tabletop games offer their own unique set of story possibilities that could be ripe for the movies. The best example is Clue, the classic murder mystery game whose 1985 film version was a cult favorite.
But there are plenty of other options too, and a few recent announcements suggest that the genre may finally be gaining momentum. Margot Robbie is producing a Monopoly movie for Universal, while the makers of Ouija and Magic: the Gathering are working on films of their own. And there’s also talk of a Star Wars spin-off that will be based on the iconic card game Risk.
All of this could be very good news if done right. But we’ve seen some of these movies flop in the past, and with so many different titles coming up for development, it’s important to choose wisely.
That’s why we’ve put together this list of potential board games movie ideas, from some of the most popular to less-recognizable fan favorites. So check it out, and let us know in the comments which one you think would make the best movie. And be sure to vote up the ones you want to see get made!
